How to create events in the new Facebook fan page

Last week I was trying to create a new event on KRC’s Facebook fan page about our upcoming Unity Meeting. It took me almost an hour to find it with the new design, so I wanted to share it with you:

This is a typical facebook fan page:

Facebook creating a new event

Before, you had to click under “See all events” and it had an option for adding new events. (Which is not that intuitive either)

So this time, you have to go to Edit page
Facebook creating a new event (1)

And then pop up the admin options of the “Events” app, and click “edit“.
Facebook creating a new event (2)

The direct link is http://www.facebook.com/editevent.php?gid=28515203003 (replace the number at the end with your Fan page’s ID)

Speaking of which, most Facebook apps need some serious work in user interface and navigation. Either there is something wrong with Facebook’s basic UI libraries, or the API is so complicated that programmers get absorbed by it and forgot to work on the UI. Others seem to agree.

You’re right, not at all intuitive!

thanks, this helped a lot, I couldn’t figure it out either before finding this helpful page!!

  4. Jennifer says:

I can’t seem to figure out how to make a member an admin. When I go to edit guest list, it only shows the people attending. I can’t delete or create admin to any of them. How do I do this?

  5. Steve says:

Boo for the Facebook redesign. Yay for people like you who help others survive!

THANK YOU! You are a lifesaver. I sent this link out on Twitter too, because others have asked me.

  8. Stephanie says:

    THANK YOU!!

This process – along with the rest of the redesign – is so ridiculous. Would it kill Facebook to hire a few user experience professionals?!

i dont even have that “events” tab option available, what should i do???

  10. Yongho Kim says:

wht: maybe yours is a group and not a fan page? or maybe you don’t have admin rights. what’s your fan page’s URL?

  11. Sally_K says:

Thank you. This post was very helpful!

  12. Caryn says:

Thank you for posting this! Silly Facebook constantly changing things so no one can figure out how to do anything! Might help if they started actually responding to ‘help’ emails, too.

  13. marci says:

I don’t get it – when I click “edit” – it gives me a “create a new event page”…I already have the event posted on my fan page, but need to “invite” people to the event. Your directions seem to just send me to another “create a new event” page. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!

  14. Yongho Kim says:

marci, your experience just illustrates my point – when a tool link is labeled “edit”, people think they are going to edit something, not ADD something new. bad, bad UI on the part of facebook.

as for what you are looking for (inviting more people) open up your event page (e.g. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=84183745845 and then click “Invite People to Come” on the right hand sidebar.

  15. Andre Kelley says:

Thank you for posting this, it was really helpful!

  16. Derrick says:

Thanks for the post. I too can’t find the events tab. My fan page is definitely a “Page” and I am the admin. Any ideas?

  17. Yongho Kim says:

Derrick: I don’t know. Check your App settings page http://www.facebook.com/editapps.php?ref=mb and see if there’s anything funny set for the Events app. Can you take a screenshot of the admin page of your fan page and upload it somewhere? That would help.

  18. DJ says:

Thanks! This was super helpful!! I am still trying to figure out how to delete events from a fan page as opposed to just adding them. Any suggestions/answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  19. jessica says:

    Hi Yongho,
    Thanks for this great info.
Do you know how to delete an event that has already happened – without it sending out something to all people who attended?
    Thanks!
    Jessica

  20. Jack says:

i’ve created an event on my fans page but can only seem to be able to invite my friends not all the fans of the page. I can send an update to them but not invite them.any ideas?

  21. luis malave says:

How can I send the event I created in a facebook page to the fans?

I don’t see anything to do it anywhere.

    Thanks

  22. Thank you for this post. I have pulled my hair out trying to navigate FB for adding event tab. It took me 3 mins after following YOUR instructions! many thanks.
