배경: 지난 9월 14일 하원 공화당 의원들은 “국경 안보 강화”라는 법안 패키지를 공개하였습니다. 현재 의회에서 토론 중인 이들 법안은 포괄적 개혁이 없는 오직 단속만을 강조하며 오히려 이민자 커뮤니티를 공격하는 성격을 지니고 있습니다. 상정되어 있는 세가지 법안 중 첫 법안은 빠르면 다음 월요일 (9월 25일) 상/하원에서 모두 통과 될 수도 있습니다.

민족학교와 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회 (미교협)을 포함하여 여러 이민자 단체들은 다음과 같은 이유로 이들 법안을 반대합니다:
1. 법안이 통과 될 경우 이민국은 누구든지 신속히 추방 할 수 있게 됩니다. 시민권자임에도 신분을 정해진 기한 내에 증명하지 못하면 자칫 추방 당할 수 도 있습니다.
2. 법안이 통과 될 경우 경찰관이 이민국 업무를 이행하게 됩니다. 이민자 커뮤니티가 경찰관을 두려워하기 시작하면 미국은 더 위험한 사회로 변하게 됩니다.
3. 근본적인 차원의 접근이 필요합니다. 포괄적 이민 개혁만이 미국의 안보를 지키고 부러진 이민 제도를 고칠 수 있습니다.

파인스타인 상원 의원에게 전화하여 (번호 202-224-3841) 이들 법안들이 상원에서 제안 될 때 반대 표를 행사해달라고 요구하십시오.

Please join KRC in calling on Congress members to oppose Anti-Immigrant Bills!
BACKGROUND: Last week on September 14th, House Republicans unveiled their “Border Security Now” agenda which attacks the immigrant community by narrowly emphasizing enforcement without a comprehensive reform. Three bills – H.R. 6061, 6094 and 6095 - are under debate in Congress; the first bill (construction of a border fence) may be ready to become law as early as next Monday (September 25th)

Many immigrant rights organizations, including the Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC, oppose these bills for the following reasons:
1. These bills would give immigration officers power to quickly deport any one. Citizens who cannot quickly prove that they are citizens could be wrongly deported.
2. These bills will transform police officers into immigration officers. America will be less safe as immigrant communities increasingly fear police officers.
3. We need to address the root causes. Only comprehensive reform can provide true security for America and a fix to the broken immigration system.
