The Health Access Project is hosting Community Health Promoter meetings with active members of the Korean American senior community. Community Health Promoters will be meeting once a month to discuss health access issues and strategize on how we can best promote a healthier Korean American community in Southern California. 여름청소년학교
8월 17일 여름청소년학교 졸업식에서
여름청소년학교: 민족학교는 이민 개혁에 있어서 중대차한 순간에 직면해 있는 한인 이민자 커뮤니티 젊은이들의 정치 의식 고양을 목표로 11명의 고등학생 및 대학생을 모집하여 정치력 구축, 디지털 다큐멘타리 제작, 오염 생선, 그리고 풍물을 주제로7월 10일부터 8월17일까지 6주간 여름청소년학교를 진행했습니다. 청소년들은 이민사와 4.29등의 주제를 가지고 한인 이민커뮤니티의 당면 과제에 대한 고민을 했으며 비쥬얼커뮤니케이션 실무진의 지도 아래 촬영 기술과 메시지 전달 개념을 익혀 개별적으로 정체성과 성장을 주제로 짧은 다큐멘타리를 제작했으며 산업 오염 물질 때문에 먹지 못하게 된 생선에 대하여 배우고 설장구를 연습했습니다.
Summer Youth Empowerment: In a critical moment for immigration reform, the Korean Resource Center recruited 11 High School and College students with the goal of awakening a political consciousness among our immigrant youth. The Summer Youth Empowerment took place for 6 weeks from July 10th until August 17th. Youth discussed pressing issues of race and immigration while studying immigration history and the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest; under the supervision of Visual Communications staff learned shooting techniques and messaging to develop a short documentary each on identity and growth; learned about environmental racism and fish that became inedible because of industrial dump materials; and learned sul-jang-gu.

(도입부) 민족학교는 <우리는 미국의 주인 가주연합>과 함께 <<민주주의 여름>>, <<가족 사진 엽서 켐페인>>, <<'이민자 커뮤니티의 기여' 이민 개혁 공청회>>등의 활동으로 통해 11월 선거 시즌을 겨냥하여 연방 의회를 계속 압박하고 있는 중입니다. 현재5,000장의 엽서 카드를 모은 상태이며www.NakasecActionFund.org 를 통하여 엽서 서명을 할 수 있습니다.
9월에는 <<노동절 미사>>, 9월 9일 <<이민자를 위한 정의의 축제>>등의 직접 활동과 그림 엽서를 본격적으로 의원에게 전달하는 등 입체적으로 공세를 강화할 계획이며 하모나와 <오렌지>의 샐리 정씨가 시카고로 떠나 한인교육문화마당집과 함께 9월1일-9월4일 50마일 거리의 이민노동자 정의의 대장정에 가세하였습니다.
Humane Immigration Reform Campaign
(Introduction) The We Are America Coalition, of which the Korean Resource Center is a member organization, continues to pressure federal congress through the “Democracy Summer” Naturalization and Voter Registration Campaign, the “We Are America” Picture Postcard Campaign and the “Ways Immigrants Contribute to America” Congressional Hearing (Aug 14th) with an eye on the November Elections. We have collected 5,000 postcards so far and you can send yours online at www.NakasecActionFun..
KRC will step up its efforts through multiple fronts in September by participating in the Labor Day Mass and direct actions such as the “Justice for Immigrants” Rally (Sep 9th) as well as sending the postcards to congress members. Morna Ha from NAKASEC and Sally Chung from ORAnGE traveled to Chicago and joined the 4-day, 50-mile Immigrant Workers Justice Walk with the Korean Resource and Cultural Center.

우리는 미국의 주인 업서 카드 캠페인
‘우리는 미국의 주인’ 그림 엽서 켐페인: 지난 7월 중순 한인 커뮤니티의 제안으로 시작한 그림 엽서 켐페인은 이민자들의 가족 실제 사진을 의원들에게 보내 인도적 이민 개혁에 대한 무언의 압력을 넣으려는 목적으로 진행하고 있습니다. 지난 7월 1일 컨벤션 센터에서 진행한 시민권 신청의 날 하루만에 2천장을 모으는 등 이민자 커뮤니티의 긍정적 응답에 힘입어 한인 마켓과 교회등의 장소에서 카드를 받은 결과 현재 5천장의 엽서 카드를 받았습니다.
또한 미교협이 조율하는 역할을 맡은 가운데 수십개의 몽계, 일본계, 베트남계, 남아시아계, 시크계등 아시안 아메리칸 전국 규모의 단체들과 라 라사 전국의회와 라틴아메리칸시민연맹, 중미센터등 라티노 및 치카노 커뮤니티에서 모두 힘을 모아 10만개 엽서를 모으는 것을 목표로 활발하게 활동 중입니다.
엽서 켐페인은 두가지 방식으로 진행되고 있는데 하나는 미리 준비된 가족 사진을 선택한 후 본인의 주소와 메시지를 기재하여 의원에게 보내는 방법이고, 다른 하나는 www.NakasecActionFun.. 에 접속하여 사진을 업로드하여 보내는 방법입니다. 엽서 켐페인은 선거 시즌을 겨낭하여 꾸준히 계속 될 계획입니다.
“We Are America” Picture Postcard Campaign: The Campaign, launched this July through the Korean American community’s leadership, has the purpose of pressuring congress members using real family pictures of immigrants, which while stacked on their office desks, will stare at congress members without saying a word, sending a strong message in favor of humane immigration reform. The immigrant community responded positively to the initiative, and the Korean Resource Center and AKASEC collected 2,000 postcards in a single day during the July 1st Naturalization Day Event at the Convention Center. Our postcard collection totals 5,000 now, based on collection efforts at community spaces including the Korean markets and churches.
With NAKASEC taking a coordinating role, dozens of Hmong, Japanese, Vietnamese, South Asian, Sikh American national organizations as well as the National Council of La Raza, League of United Latin American Citizens, the Central American Center and the latino and chicano communities are actively engaged in the campaign, with a national goal of 100,000 postcards.
The campaign is unfolding in two ways: one is choosing a pre-made family picture to list your address and message to have it sent to congress members, and the other is going online at www.NakasecActionFun.. to upload your own picture. The postcard campaign will stay put with an eye to the elections season.

“이민자 커뮤니티의 기여” 이민 개혁 공청회: 민족학교와 미교협이 회원 단체로 들어가 있는 <우리는 미국의 주인 가주연합>은 하원 주도의 반이민 공청회에 대응하여 8월 14일 “이민자 커뮤니티의 기여”를 주제로 UCLA 대학에서 친 이민 개혁 공청회를 열었습니다.
히스패닉하원코커스의 의장 그레이스 나폴리타노 하원의원이 경청하는 앞에서 UC Davis 대학 아시안아메리칸학 힝 교수와 흑인전국연합 제1지역 국장 자말 왓킨스등 시민단체 지도자들과 나성 노동/교계 연합의 마이크 구티에레즈 등 교계 일련의 지도자와 미전국노동조합총 연맹의 LA 지부 임시 사무총장 마리아 엘레나 두라소등 각계 전문가들이 차례로 이민자들의 경제 사회 문화적 기여에 대하여 증언하였습니다.
이어서 부모가 추방당하여 가족과 생이별의 아픔을 겪은 한인 고등학생 앤드류 정을 대신하여 증언서를 읽은 미교협 실무진 이주형, 제2차대전 참전 용사임에도 자녀를 미국으로 초청한후 15년간 허가가 나기를 기다리고 있는 중인 필리핀 이민자 아드리아노 엘나르 카리노 및 이그나시아 부부, 이라크에서 임무 수행 중 전사하여 사후 시민권이 부여된 아들의 멕시코 이민자 어머니 로살바 쿤등의 증언을 청중은 눈물을 머금고 정중히 경청하였습니다.
또한 힐튼 호텔에서 노동하며 자녀들을 길러내 대학까지 보낸 페루 이민자 패티 시먼스, 서류미비자 고등학생으로서 AB 540 의 혜택을 받아 대학에 입학하여 활발하게 이민자 권익 활동에 참여하고 있는 엘시 자발라, 서류미비자로서 대학을 졸업하여 초등학교 학생을 가르치고 있는 중미 엘 살바도르 이민자 윌 에체베리아등이 담담히 자신의 이민사와 삶의 투쟁에 대해 이야기하여 격려의 갈채를 받기도 하였습니다.
나폴리타노 의원은 “이라크 침략 전쟁에 수억 달러를 쏟아 붓고 있는 공화당 지도부는 국내 이민자 이슈에 대하여는 손을 놓고 있는 오늘의 실정에서 용기를 잃지 말고 계속 공개 논쟁, 시위와 커뮤니티 조직 활동등을 통해 친 이민 아젠다를 실현하길 바란다”라며 격려의 메세지를 남겼으며 십여명의 연방의회 및 가주의회 상하의원들은 성명서를 통해 하원 지도부 주도의 공청회에 대한 비난과 포괄적인 이민 개혁에 대한 지지 입장을 밝혔습니다. <우리는 미국의 주인 가주연합>은 이번 공청회의 토의 내용을 정리하여 연방 의회에 보내고 꾸준히 인도적인 이민 개혁안을 요구하기로 하였습니다.
“Balancing the Story: Ways Immigrants Contribute to America” Immigration Reform Congressional Hearing: The We Are America Coalition, of which the Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC are member organizations, held a pro-immigrant congressional hearing this past August 14th at UCLA in response to the anti-immigrant hearings led by the House.
A number of prominent immigration experts ? Professor of Asian American Studies Bill Hing of UC Davis, NAACP Region 1 Director Jamal Watkins, top religious leaders led by Mike Gutierrez from Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO Interim Executive Secretary-Treasurer Maria Elena Durazo ? one after another testified on the economic, social and cultural contributions of immigrants to this country in front of Rep. Grace Napolitano, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus
Afterwards, immigrants themselves came forward to give word on the struggles and hardships overcome of being an immigrant in America ? NAKASEC staff Juhyung Lee, who read Andrew Jung’s statement on having his parents deported to Korea and being left alone in the States, the Filipino husband and wife Adriano Elnar Carino and Ignacia Carino, who, as Second World War Veterans had been waiting for 15 years to be reunited to their child, and the Mexican immigrant mother Rosalba Kuhn whose son was killed in action in Iraq ? at which the audience listened in deeply felt silence.
Then followed the stories of Patty Simons, a Peruvian immigrant who worked at Hilton Hotel raising her children to send them off to college, Elsy Zavala, who had entered college as an undocumented high school student with the benefits of the AB 540 bill and became active in the immigrant rights movement, the Salvadoran immigrant Will Echeverria who was teaching elementary school students; the hall sent a loud ovation to the hardworking mother, student, and teacher immigrants.
Representative Napolitano encouraged the witnesses: “the Republican Leadership does not hold back in spending billions at the Invasion to Iraq, and yet will not move at the issue of immigration that is happening right in our homes; you should not lose this spirit of struggle and keep pressuring congress members through public debates, marches and community organizing for a pro-immigrant agenda”. A number of representatives of the Federal and California Congress issued statements criticizing the series of hearing led by the House leadership and supporting comprehensive immigration reform. We Are America Coalition will send the hearing content to Congress and keep pushing for humane immigration reform.
오렌지
청소년 단체 “오렌지”: 민족학교 청소년 단체 오렌지는 7월-8월 시민권 신청과 엽서 켐페인 등 이민자 권익 활동에 참여하고 여름청소년학교의 조교 역할을 맡는 등 활발한 활동을 했습니다. 또한 드림법안에 대한 다큐멘타리를 제작하여 여름청소년학교 졸업식에서 첫 상영식을 가졌습니다. 8월 말에는 자체적으로 $5,000 달러를 모금하여 오렌지 회원 11명이 실무진과 함꼐 열흘간 육로로 뉴올리언즈로 이동, 흑인 커뮤니티와 연대 활동을 벌였습니다. 연대 활동의 연장선상에서 민족학교는 아태계 청소년 단체들과 함께 10월 중순경 구 필리피노타운을 견학하여 문화적 이해를 가지려는 계획을 고려 중입니다.
ORAnGE: The Korean Resource Center’s youth organization, ORAnGE, actively participated in immigrant rights activities such as the naturalization clinics and the postcard campaign, as well as becoming Teaching Assistants to the Summer Youth Empowerment program. Also, ORAnGE produced a documentary on the DREAM Act and premiered it at the Summer Youth Empowerment Graduation Ceremony. In Late August, after fundraising $5,000 for travel costs, 11 ORAnGE members and staff drove to New Orleans and worked in solidarity with the black community over a period of ten days. On the line of solidarity work, KRC is considering visiting Historic Filipinotown with other API youth organizations in order to gain a cultural understanding of the work in other communities.
AB 540 워크샵
서류미비자 고등학생을 위한 AB 540 워크샵: 민족학교는 6월 9일 AB 540 전문 상담가 지경희 및 실무진 마성표를 통해 서류미비자 고등학생들이 주립 대학 및 커뮤니티 컬리지에서 거주자 할인 학비를 받을 수 있도록 하는 가주 법안인 AB 540 에 대한 설명 및 신청 워크샵을 열었습니다. 지경희씨는 서류미비자는 정부 보조금은 받을 수 없으나 AB540 을 신청 할 수 있으며 일부 장학금이 신분을 따지지 않고 지급되고 있다며 워크샵을 찾은 30여명의 학부모에게 여러가지 방법을 모색해볼 것을 촉구했습니다. 마성표씨는 서류미비자 고등학생에게 시민권에 이르는 길을 제공하는 연방 드림 법안과 현재 벌어지고 있는 활발한 이민 개혁 운동에 대하여 소개하며 희망을 잃지 말자고 이야기했습니다.
AB 540 Workshop for Undocumented High School Students: The Korean Resource Center held an AB 540 information and application workshop on June 9th with AB 540 expert Kyoung Hee Chi and KRC Staff Sungpyo Ma. AB 540 is a California state law passed in 2001 that allows undocumented High School students to pay in-state tuition at state universities and community colleges. Kyoung Hee urged the 30 workshop-attending parents to seek various ways to finance their children’s college education given that they can apply for AB 540 as well as various scholarships that are provided without regard to the immigration status of the student. Sungpyo introduced the federal DREAM Act, which would provide a path to citizenship to undocumented High School students, and the current immigrant rights movement, and asked parents to not lose hope.
노동절 미사
노동절 미사: 민족학교와 미교협은 9월 4일 천사의 성모 성당에서 열리는 연례 노동절 미사에 동참, <<가족 사진 엽서 켐페인>>을 진행했습니다. 마호니 추기경은 서류미비자 사면과 노동자 권리, 보다 나은 의료 제도와 주택 환경 그리고 이민자 권익을 중심으로 시민 참여를 강조하는 메시지를 전달했습니다. 스페인어와 영어로만 진행되었던 프로그램에 금년에는 우리말과 타갈로어가 추가되었습니다. 또한 오렌지 회장인 이상훈씨가 우리말로 시민 참여에 대한 기도문을 읽고 병원 실험실 기술자인 이예자씨를 포함한 노동자들이 축복을 받는 등 한인 및 아태계 이민자 커뮤니티에 대한 인식을 높였습니다.
Labor Day Mass: KRC and NAKASEC joined the annual Labor Day Mass at the Cathedral Our Lady of Angels on September 4th and continued its “Family Picture Postcard Campaign”. Cardinal Mahoney delivered a message for immigrant legalization, worker’s rights, better health care and housing, and a call to civic participation with focus on immigrant rights. The program, previously in Spanish and English, now includes components in Tagalog and Korean. Sang Hoon Lee, President of ORAnGE, read the prayer about Civic Participation; workers, including Yeh Ja Lee, a hospital Lab Technician, were blessed, increasing awareness about the Korean and API immigrant community.

9월 9일 “이민자를 위한 정의의 축제” 집회 및 문화 행사: 이민자 단체들은 노동절을 전후하여 전국적으로 일어나 집회와 행진을 통하여 하원 주도의 공청회에 대한 반대와 인도적 이민 개혁을 촉구하고 있습니다. 민족학교와 미교협은 9월 9일 <라티노전국집회>가 주관하며 <우리는 미국의 주인 가주연합>이 참여하는 “이민자를 위한 정의의 축제”에 참여하게 될 것입니다. 음악 밴드와 공연 단체들 그리고 라티노 친이민 정치인들이 대거 참여하여 축제의 성격을 지닌 이번 집회에 민족학교는 풍물패를 중심으로 모이게 될 것입니다.
September 9th “Justice for Immigrants” Rally and Cultural Event: Immigrant organizations are rising up nationally on the occasion of Labor Day Weekend through rallies and marches to voice our opposition to House-led hearing and to call for humane immigration reform. The Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC will participate in the “Justice for Immigrants” rally, organized by the National Latino Congreso and where the We Are America Coalition joins as a co-convening organization. At this rally, which with a large number of music and performance bands and pro-immigrant latino politicians will take on a festive character, the Korean Resource Center will participate organized mainly around our Korean poongmul drummers.

복구 지역 현재 피해 상황
민족학교와 미교협은 흑인 사회 정의 운동 커뮤니티와의 연대 관계를 공고히 하고 풀뿌리 활동 방식에 대하여 배우기 위하여 흑인 주도의 뉴올리언즈 재건 및 사회 활동 단체인 민중조직위(POC)에 두차례 연대 및 복구 활동팀을 파견했습니다. 제1차 팀은 실무진 윤대중, Christine Lee, 하모나로 구성되어 6월 18일-23일 활동을 했으며 재2차 팀은 실무진(마성표 이주형 한선주 김용호)과 민족학교 청소년 단체 오렌지 회원 (이상훈 이은경 제시카 에스더 수지 강한나 정주영 이청목 이창률 이상 김태연)으로 구성되어 육로를 통해 뉴올리언즈로 이동한 후 8월 20일-26일 활동을 했습니다.
미국 사회의 제도적인 인종차별 때문에 홍수에 약한 제9구역에 살게 된 가장 가난한 흑인들은 정계 및 주류 자선 단체에서 철저히 버림받았으며 아직 일부 가구가 침수 상태 그태로 방치되어 있는가 하면 정부에서 미복구 땅을 몰수하여 일부 기업에게 판매하고 있는 실정입니다. 50만 인구중 흑인이 35만명이던 뉴올리언즈는 현재 25만명의 흑인이 죽거나 타주로 강제이주된 채 돌아올 방법은 요원한 상태에서 백인 중심의 도시로 개조되고 있습니다.
작년 전국적으로 모금된 200억 달러는 일부 개발업자와 단체에게만 지급되는 현실에서 다른 단체들은 복구 자금을 재건에 이용하라는 요구를 하고 있으나 민중조직위는 가장 가난하고 가장 피부색이 검은 흑인들을 중심으로 정부의 도움 없이 스스로 커뮤니티를 재건하려는 투쟁을 벌이고 있습니다.
목요일 24일, 민중조직위는 뉴올리언즈 이민노동자연합의 기자 회견에 연대 참여하였습니다. 호텔 노동자들이 2주간 착취를 당하며 겨우 $18을 받은 것에 대하여 전국노사관계부에 불만 제기를 접수했습니다. 우리 팀은 민중조직위와 함께 “노동자 탄압 중지하라!”를 스페인어와 영어로 외치며 집회에 가세하였습니다.
민족학교와 미교협 실무진 및 오렌지 회원들은 수몰 가구 해체 작업, 폰뱅킹과 가가호호 방문등 주민 조직 활동에 참여하고 민중조직위 설립자 커티스 모함메드에게서 민중조직위의 이념과 풀뿌리 조직활동에 대하여 배웠습니다.
Solidarity Activities with Black and Muslim Communities
Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC dispatched two recovery effort solidarity delegations to the People’s Organizing Committee (POC), a New Orleans organization committed to bottom-up organizing led by the poorest black peoples. The first team of Dae Yoon, Christine Lee, Morna Ha worked for one week during June; the second team was made of staff (Sungpyo, Juhyung, Seon-Joo, Yongho) and KRC’s youth group ORAnGE (Sang Hoon, Eunice, Jessica, Esther, Susie, Hanna, Juyoung, Chungmok, Changryul, Sang, Taiyoun) and worked for ten days in August.
Those living in the 9th Ward are the poorest blacks who have been systematically discriminated by the United States and ignored by politicians and mainstream charity organizations. Many houses remain abandoned to the weather, and the government is applying eminent domain and selling property to corporations. New Orleans was a city of 500,000 where 350,000 was black; 250,000 blacks either died or have been transferred to other states with few ways of returning home. The city is being redeveloped as a white-centered city.
The 20 billion raised last year is only being given to certain developers and organizations. Other organizations demand the use of these funds for recovery efforts. POC, however, is fighting to rebuild the community from the bottom-up, led by the poorest and blackest blacks, without any help from the state.
On Thursday 24th, POC joined a Press Conference by the Immigrant Worker Coalition of New Orleans with hotel workers filing an unfair labor practices claim against their employer who had denied them paychecks trying to take advantage of the worker’s status. High School Youth at ORAnGE and staff from the Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC followed the POC and joined the fight, shouting “¡No Mas Represalias!” and “No More Reprisals!”
Staff at KRC and NAKASEC, and ORAnGE members participated in house gutting work, resident organizing through phone banking and canvassing. We also learned about POC’s principles and bottom-up organizing from Curtis Muhammad, POC’s founder.
Katrina Anniversary Rally
카트리나 1주년 집회: 나성으로 돌아온 이후8월 29일 카트리나 1주년 집회에 참여하였습니다. 다운타운 연방 청사 앞에서 열려 60여명이 참가한 집회 이후 열린 기자 회견에서 각계 인사들은 정부의 대응을 촉구하였으며 미교협의 하모나는 무너진 건물 재건과 의료 시설 복구를 목적으로 정부가 특별지원자금을 투입 할 것을 요구했습니다.
Katrina Anniversary Rally: Upon returning to Los Angeles, we participated in the Katrina Anniversary Rally, organized by ACORN. After the 60-participant rally in front of the Downtown Federal Building, various speakers urged for government response to the reconstruction efforts, and Morna Ha from NAKASEC demanded that the government set up a special support fund to reconstruct houses and rebuild health care facilities.
Voting Rights March
Voting Rights March: High School youth from O.R.A.n.G.E. and staff from the Korean Resource Center and NAKASEC joined in solidarity with a poongmul troupe at the Voting Rights Coalition’s March on August 30th, 2006. Among the speakers were an audio recording of Dr. Martin Luther King, Rev. 투표권 행진 오렌지 고등학생과 민족학교 및 미교협 실무진은 8월 30일 투표권리연합의 행진에 연대 의식으로 풍물패를 앞세워 참여하였습니다. 연설자 중에는 마틴 루터 킹 목사의 음성 녹음, 알 샤프턴 목사, 마이크 깁슨 시 의원, 그리고 뉴올리언즈 연대 활동에서 방금 돌아온 오렌지 회원등이 있었습니다.
중동문제포럼
Community Forum on Peace in the Middle East: Young Koreans United (YKU), Korean Alliance for Peace and Justice (KAPJ), NAKASEC (National Korean American Service and Education Consortium) and the Korean Resource Center (KRC) invited Hussam Ayloush, Executive Director of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) on August 31st for a community forum on Lebanon and Peace in the Middle East. Mr. Ayloush emphasized the Israeli occupation over Palestinian land as the source of most Middle Eastern conflict, including the recent incidents in Lebanon, and agreed with the audience that both a peaceful resolution and further community education about the issue are needed.
중동 평화 문제 커뮤니티 포럼: 한국청년연합 (한청련), 한겨레, 미교협 및 민족학교는 8월 31 일 CAIR (미국-이슬람 관계 회의) 의 사무국장 후삼 알루시 (Hussam Ayloush) 씨를 초대하여 <<레바논과 중동 평화 문제에 대한 커뮤니티 포럼>>을 열었습니다. 이메일을 통해서 포럼 소식을 접한 대학생에서 신문을 통해 포럼을 알게 된 연장자까지 다양한 연령층의 30명 가량 한인, 중동계 무슬림, 백인 주민이 모여 발표를 경청하고 1시간 가량 질문이 끊이지 않는 등 레바논 사태에 대한 높은 관심과 평화에 대한 열정을 보여주었습니다. 알루시씨는 레바논 사태를 포함한 중동 분쟁 대부분의 불씨를 이스라엘 국가의 팔레스타인 영토 강점으로 분석하고 평화로운 분쟁 해결과 이 사안에 대한 더 많은 커뮤니티 교육 활동의 중요성을 강조했습니다.
