WHY THE CENSUS IS IMPORTANT
The US Census is a constitutionally mandated count of everyone living in America, taken every 10 years. However, the Census is more than a count! Census data is used to determine political representation and direct resources into our communities. For example, 15 million dollars were allocated to 13 LAUSD elementary, middle, and high schools with high populations of Korean American students last year based on Census data.
KOREAN AMERICANS AND THE CENSUS
Traditionally, the Korean American community has been undercounted by the Census. Our community faces some unique challenges that affect participation: many of us have limited English skills and some of us are unfamiliar with the process of participating in the Census and how Census data is used.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
Join our team of Census volunteers to ensure that our community is accurately counted by educating Koreatown residents about the Census and encouraging them to participate. The energy of high school and college students is crucial to the success of our outreach effort. Volunteering is a chance to give back to your community, learn about the democratic process, and make some new friends. We will be happy to work with you on any of the following dates: February 21 and 28, and March 7, 13, 20, and 27. Community service certificates will be available to those who participate.
