Mayor Villaraigosa, Asian American and Pacific Islander Leaders Collaborate to Spur Census 2010 Participation in Los Angeles: Effort Seeks to Counteract High “Hard to Count” Population of the City of Los Angeles
What: Los Angeles Asian Pacific Islander 2010 Census Network kick-off event.
When: Monday, January 25, 2010 at 10:15 am
Where: Asian Pacific American Legal Center (1145 Wilshire Blvd, First Floor Community Room, Los Angeles, CA 90017). Parking is available in the parking structure next door
Why: As the fastest growing ethnic minority in Los Angeles County, it is vitally important that the Asian American and Pacific Islander population is completely counted during Census 2010.
Community leaders from across platforms will come together at this event to discuss the impacts of Census data and the importance of making sure everyone is counted. Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are among some of the harder-to-count communities in L.A. County, which has one of highest Census undercount numbers of any other county in the state. A high concentration of the API population living in Los Angeles means extra attention and effort is needed for effective outreach.
The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Islander 2010 Census Network is a coalition of 13 diverse local API community groups who will be working with local government, census officials, and across communities to develop new methods for outreaching to these communities and ensuring that they are counted.
Who: Featured speakers and participants include:
Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor, City of Los Angeles
Bill Fujioka, Chief Executive Office, County of Los Angeles (invited)
James Christy, Director, U.S. Census Bureau Los Angeles Regional Office
Stewart Kwoh, Executive Director, Asian Pacific American Legal Center
Chancee Martorell, Executive Director, Thai Community Development Center
