medi-cal language access campaign

The struggles of limited
English proficient seniors are
all too familiar to the Korean
American community.
Over 17,076 people  in
Los Angeles county have
stated that they would prefer
to receive their Medi-Cal letters
in Korean. Because of this high
number, Korean has been identified
as one of 7 threshold languages
that must be provided service
as mandated by the Civil
Rights Act.

However, the needs of monolingual
Korean American senior citizens
are rarely met. Many seniors
have been forced to go to community
organizations like the Korean
Resource Center, their adult
day care center, senior apartment
staff, friends and family members
to understand the letters they
receive from Medi-Cal because
they are written in English.

All
beneficiaries deserve the right
to understand their public health
benefits. Please sign this petition.

영어능력이 부족한 한인 연장자들께서 많은
어려움을 겪고 계신다는 점은
한인 커뮤니티 내에 익히 알려진
사실입니다. 로스 앤젤레스 카운티의
경우 17,076명이 넘는 사람들이
메디칼 편지를 우리말로 보내
달라고 신청을 했습니다. 우리말을
사용하는 인구가 많기 때문에
민권 차별금지법에 의해 우리말이
보건국에서 지원해야 하는 언어로
지정되어 있습니다. 

모든
이들은 자신의 보건 혜택
내용을 이해 할 권리가 있습니다.
편지를 우리말로 보낼 것을 요구하는
온라인 서명을 해주십시오.

민족학교 공부 모임

민족학교 자원봉사자들과 함께하는 공부
모임에 참여해보세요. 저희들은
한인 및 아시안 아메리칸 이민사와
의료개혁, 전쟁 등 다양한 주제를
다루고 있으며 영화 또는 다큐멘터리
상영 후 토론하는 방식으로 진행하고
있습니다. 이러한 공부를 통해
저희의 활동 방식을 되돌아보고
개선하고자 합니다.
