Korean American Voters Embrace California’s Renters
Over 90% of voters reached by KRC pledge to vote NO on Prop.98 in June
Los Angeles, CA – Volunteers from the Korean Resource Center (KRC) have been contacting thousands of Korean American voters over the past two weeks. After countless nights making phone calls and running from door to door, the results so far are encouraging: 92% of Korean American voters contacted by KRC will oppose Proposition 98, a ballot initiative that threatens the homes and lives of thousands of families and community members in Los Angeles and across the state by ending rent control, inclusionary housing laws, and tenant relocation benefits.
Woo Youn Han, a volunteer who is also a member of KRC’s Power Vote 2008 – a group of community leaders committed to increasing the civic participation among Korean American voters – said “I want people to know that civic participation is our right, but that at the same time it is our duty”.
Founded in 1983, the Korean Resource Center (KRC) works to empower the Korean American and immigrant communities through education, advocacy and grassroots organizing. Since 1996, KRC has coordinated a multi-faceted program providing a seamless path to full participation, registering over 10,000 voters, distributing 100,000 voter education materials, and mobilizing over 5,000 voters at every electoral season.
