Elected Officials & Community Leaders Stand Together; “Save us from the SAVE Act!”
What:
Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and community leaders will hold a
Press conference prior to the LA City Council vote on a resolution opposing the Save
America through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act, H.R. 4088 sponsored by Reps. Shuler (D-NC) and Tancredo (R-CO).
Background:
The SAVE Act, requiring approximately six-million employers to verify the work status of more than 130 million workers within four years and based on the usage of faulty federal databases and a misused program, would likely cripple an already struggling economy, endanger the jobs of millions of legal residents and citizens, and encourage an underground free-for-all cash market driving undocumented workers into the shadows. Passage of the SAVE Act would further require local law enforcement to take on the added responsibility of enforcing immigration law, a burden that will not only bully the very community local police wishes to serve, but will also be impossible to enact appropriately or effectively. AJC, CHIRLA, the ACLU of Southern California, NAKASEC and others reaffirm the need for Congress to pass Humane Immigration reform and applaud the City Council for bringing a resolution to vote opposing legislation that would erode the values on which the nation was built.
