일부러 불체자가 되는 유학생들 학비혜택이 목적

저렴한 학비 혜택을 받기 위해 합법체류 신분 을 감추거나 포기하는 한인 학생들이 적지 않은 것으로 나타나 충격을 주고 있다.
한인 서류미비 학생들의 AB540 학비 혜택 신청을 대행하고 있는 한인 봉사단체 관 계자들에 따르면 올 들어 AB540 신청 문의를 해온 한인 학생들의 20% 정도가 학생비자(F-1)를 소지한 조기 유학생이거나 부모가 학생비자를 소지한 F-2신분 학생들 이었으며 이들은 학비 혜택을 받기 위해서는 스스로 합법체류 신분 포기도 주저하지 않고 있다고 한다， 이들은 불법체류 신분이 되더라 도 시민권자와 결혼하면 된다거나 졸업하자 마자 한국으로 돌아갈 계획을 갖고 있어 문제 될 것이 없다며 심지어는 AB540 신청으로 신분을 잃어도 엄마가 위장결혼을 하면 체류신분을 되찾을 수 있다고 말하는 학생도 있는 것으로 알려졌다 그러나 일부는 추방 위기에 처할 수 있다는 지적이 나오고 있다. (CBS) CHICAGO A government letter is at the center of a Social Security controversy for workers’ rights, discrimination and illegal firings.
As CBS 2’s Rafael Romo reports, Alexandra Camacho is a citizen of the United States, but last year she was in danger of losing her job after she received a government letter saying her Social Security number did not match her name.
“I think that a lot of people don’t come forward and talk about the problems that they have because they may be scared,” Camacho said. “They may be scared that the company will target them.” Read the rest of this entry »

한인 2세들을 보면 한인 커뮤니티에 대한 애착도가 그리 크지 않은 경우가 많다. 미국에서 태어나 영어를 쓰며 미국 문화에 길들여진 2세에게 한국말을 하고 한국에 대한 추억을 공유하는 한인 커뮤니티는 낯선 세계일 뿐이다.
조앤 리 변호사(33)도 LA법률보조재단에서 일하기 전까지 여느 한인 2세와 다를 바 없었다. 뉴욕에서 태어난 조 변호사는 메릴랜드에서 자랐다. 외국인이 많지 않은 동네여서 친구들 대부분이 백인이거나 미국인에 가까운 한인 2세였다.
