민족학교(사무국장 윤대중)에서는 오는 6월 26일, 목요일, 저녁 7시 주택 구입 안내 세미나를 갖는다.
이번 세미나는 최근 주택시장이 침체되고 주택 가격의 하락이 예상됨에 따라 주택 장만을 계획하고 있는 한인들을 위해 마련된 것으로, 부동산 전문가들이 참가하여 주택 구입의 절차를 상세히 설명하는 것 뿐만 아니라, 최근 쏟아져 나오는 숏세일 매물들에 대한 소개도 있을 예정이다.

코리안 아메리칸의 힘으로 주민발의안 98을 막아냈다!
렌트 컨트롤, 저소득층 주택 의무규정, 세입자 권리 수호
(로스 앤젤레스) 지난 밤, 렌트 컨트롤, 저소득층 주택개발 의무규정, 세입자 권리를 앗아갈 뻔 했던 주민발의안 98의 통과가 저지된 데 대해 커뮤니티 구성원들이 승리를 자축했다. 60.9%의 유권자가 주민발의안 98에 반대하여 통과를 저지시키고, 반대 법안인 주민발의안 99는 62.4%의 지지를 얻어 통과시켰다. 이는 주택 차압 및 식료품/ 가스비 폭등으로 얼룩진 현행 불경기에서, 렌트 컨트롤과 저소득층 주택 의무규정에 의지하고 있는 저소득층 노동자 가정의 생존이 달린 중대한 승리이다.

Korean Americans say NO to Prop 98!
Rent Control, Affordable Housing and Tenant Rights Upheld!
(Los Angeles, CA) Community members celebrated last night with the defeat of Prop 98, a ballot measure that would have ended rent control, affordable housing development and tenant rights. 60.9% voted no on Prop 98, while Prop 99, a counter ballot to Prop 98, passed with 62.4%. This is a significant victory for low-income and working class families that rely on rent control and affordable housing to survive in the current economic climate of house foreclosures and sky-rocketing gas and food prices.

Community Unites to Educate and Empower Undocumented Students and Their Right to Public Higher Education
(Anaheim, Orange County) On Tuesday, June 3, 2008, 70 students, parents, educators and community leaders came together at Loara High School to learn about the college admissions process for undocumented students, and AB540, a state law that allows eligible students to pay in-state tuition at California colleges and universities. The community education forum – “Access to Equal Education” – was organized by a coalition of community-based organizations and advocacy groups dedicated to educating the diverse immigrant communities of Orange County about their access to higher education.

서류미비 학생의 정치력 신장과 교육, 그들의 교육권을 위해 커뮤니티가 하나로 뭉치다
(오렌지 카운티, 애나하임) 2008년 6월 2일, 화요일, 70여명의 학생, 부모님, 교육자, 커뮤니티 지도자가Loara 고등학교에 모여, 서류미비 학생의 칼리지 입학 과정과 AB540 (캘리포니아 소재 칼리지와 대학에서 자격이 만족하는 학생에게 주거주민 학비를 제공하는 주법안)에 대해 배우는 시간을 가졌다. 커뮤니티 교육 포럼 – “평등한 교육의 기회” – 는 오렌지 카운티에서 고등 교육의 기회에 대해 다양한 이민자 커뮤니티를 교육해 온 커뮤니티 기반 단체들과 옹호단체들의 연합체 주최로 개최되었다.

The First Ever Asian American Pacific Islander Presidential Town Hall

On Saturday, May 17th, 2008, history was made when the first ever Asian America Pacific Islander American (AAPI) Presidential Town Hall took place at the University of California Irvine. From a contingent of senior Native Hawaiians proudly wearing leis to Filipino war veterans in their army uniforms to Korean American seniors with their translation headsets blinking red, the audience represented the rich diversity that is our AAPI community. Participants from across the nation came together to celebrate that diversity and to share a vision of tomorrow in which our civic voices are acknowledged by elected officials, that policies reflect our needs and issues, and that our communities continue to grow strong and healthy within American society.

Korean American Voters Embrace California’s Renters
Over 90% of voters reached by KRC pledge to vote NO on Prop.98 in June
Los Angeles, CA – Volunteers from the Korean Resource Center (KRC) have been contacting thousands of Korean American voters over the past two weeks. After countless nights making phone calls and running from door to door, the results so far are encouraging: 92% of Korean American voters contacted by KRC will oppose Proposition 98, a ballot initiative that threatens the homes and lives of thousands of families and community members in Los Angeles and across the state by ending rent control, inclusionary housing laws, and tenant relocation benefits.
