Youth Empowerment Program (SYEP) students.

SYEP is an annual program held every
summer by KRC. This year, 12 students participated
in the 6-week program, where they were taught
about civil/immigrant rights, and participated
in various educational activities and field
trips, including a weekend trip across California.

활동을 포함하는 여름청소년학교
프로그램을 이수한 12명의 학생들을 위한
졸업식을 가져, 그 동안 배웠던 것을 발표하고
청소년들이 제작한 다큐멘터리를 상영합니다.

민족학교와 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회(이하 미교협)은 5.18기념재단, 재미한국청년연합과 함께 오는 5월 31일 (토요일) 민족학교 설립 25주년 및 5.18 광주민중항쟁 28주년 기념 “이주 이민자의 인권현황 및 사회적 권리 보장 모색을 위한 국제 심포지움”을 개최합니다.
이번 심포지움에서는 5.18 광주민중항쟁에서 피어나 오늘날까지 재미동포사회에 계승되는 오월정신을 담은 영상, 풍물, 춤이 어우러진 문화공연 “봄… 꽃… 길”을 공연하며, 청소년들은 에니메이션을 제작하는 등 다채로운 문화체험을 맛 볼 기회가 제공됩니다. 이와 같은 문화 부문에 대하여 자세히 소개하는 기자회견을 갖고자 하오니 부디 참석하셔서 널리 알려주시면 감사하겠습니다.

Children’s Health Coverage at Stake
Every day, the Korean Resource Center sees and hears from Korean American families who are in desperate need for health care. Oftentimes, the only affordable option for these hard-working parents to care for their children is through subsidized health insurance.
In 2007, the health of 6.6 million children depended upon the reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) Passing both the House and Senate with wide bipartisan support, S-CHIP legislation that would expand coverage and extend the program for five years was vetoed twice by President Bush. On Dec. 29, a temporary measure was passed to merely sustain subsidized children health insurance programs until March 2009 at the current funding levels. Unfortunately, this means that 2.4 million children who are eligible but have not yet enrolled will face difficulty in accessing vital health services.

무자년 지신밟기
민족학교와 문화패 ‘한누리’는 무자년 새해를 맞아 타운을 돌며 한
해 동안의 안녕을 기원하고 복을 기원하는 우리 고유의 공동체 문화인
지신밟기 행사를 다음과 같이 갖습니다.
 코리안
아메리칸 커뮤니티가 다민족 사회에서 어우러져 살고 있기에 이 땅에서의
지신밟기는 동포사회 뿐만 아니라 모든 커뮤니티가 평안한 한 해를 보낼
수 있도록 기원하는 마음도 담고 있습니다.
무자년에는 특별히 일본계 커뮤니티에서 2차 대전 당시 강제 수용의
의미를 되새기는 연례행사에 참여하여 아픔을 함께 하고 밝고 건강한
미래를 함께 꿈꿀 수 있는 계기도 마련했습니다.
또한, 지신밟기를 마친 후에는 민족학교에 모여 고유 명절을 체험하는 시간을 가지려고
하오니 모든 가족이 참여하셔서 즐겁고 의미 있는 시간 되시길 바랍니다.

Korean Resource Center and the Korean American Cultural Troupe “HanNuRi”
invite you to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Year of the Rat) with
a uniquely Korean American cultural event - JiShinBalpGi (”Stepping
on the Spirit of the Earth”) - during which we will visit places
in Koreatown and wish all a prosperous new year full of “bok”
(good luck).
As members of a multi-ethnic society, we celebrate JiShinBalpGi
to wish a peaceful and harmonious new year not only for our Korean
American sisters and brothers, but also for all communities.
In this Year of the Rat, our JiShinBalpGi troupe will also be
participating in a commemorative event with the Japanese American
community, to remember together the pains suffered by the community
during the concentration camps of the Second World War, and to wish
for a healthy future for all.
After JiShinBalpGi, we plan on gathering at the Korean Resource
Center for traditional festivities. Please come with your
family for a great time!
