Readout of the President’s Meeting With Asian American and Pacific Islander National Leaders

This afternoon, the President met with a group of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) national leaders to discuss his call for commonsense immigration reform that will strengthen the economy and grow the middle class. The President emphasized that commonsense immigration reform continues to be a top legislative priority and that he looks forward to working with the AAPI community to achieve that goal. The leaders expressed their support for the principles that the President and key Senators working on immigration reform have laid out and their strong desire for a bill that provides a pathway to earned citizenship and supports family unity. The leaders also expressed their commitment to working with Congress to strengthen the legislation that is being considered. The President and the leaders also discussed a number of issues of importance to Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, including efforts to provide affordable, accessible health care to AAPI communities. Finally, the President thanked participants for their leadership and commitment to ensuring that the American Dream remains attainable for all communities and families, as well as generations to come.

민족학교의 윤대중 사무국장이 오바마 대통령 주재로 백악관에서 열린 이민 개혁 회의에 참가했다. 5월 8일 오후 백악관에서 열린 이민 개혁 회의는 전국의 아시아계 커뮤니티 지도자 15명이 초청되었으며, 윤대중 사무국장은 미주한인봉사교육단체협의회와 그 지역단체인 민족학교와 시카고한인교육문화마당집을 대표하여 한인 커뮤니티의 이민 개혁에 관한 의견을 오바마 대통령에게 전달했다.

윤대중 사무국장은 “이번 백악관 회의는 이민 개혁 논의에 있어서 아시안 커뮤니티의 의견을 직접 대통령에게 전달할 수 있었다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다. 오바마 대통령은 올해 안에 반드시 이민 개혁이 통과되기를 희망하고 있으며, 비록 모든 커뮤니티가 원하는 완벽한 이민 개혁이 되지 못한다 하더라도 통과 이후 시행 과정에서 개선시켜 나갈 수 있도록 커뮤니티가 힘을 모아줄 것을 당부했다.”고 회의 내용을 전했다.

윤대중 사무국장은 오바마 대통령과의 회의에서 주로 이민개혁 및 의료개혁에서 한인 커뮤니티의 우려점들에 대한 발언을 함으로써 한인 커뮤니티를 대변했다.

민족학교 2013년 오렌지카운티 여름 청소년 프로그램

민족학교는 오렌지카운티 여름청소년 프로그램을 진행한다. 민족학교의 여름 청소년 프로그램은 사회 정의, 봉사, 자기 표현, 문화, 그리고 정체성 교육을 통해 한인 청소년들의 리더십을 개발하는 5주 프로그램으로 워크샵과 강의를 통해 한인 청소년들에게 주요 사회 이슈에 대한 교육을 제공할 예정이다.

또한, 대학생들과의 만남을 통해 세계에 대한 시야를 넓히고, 독서와 토론 그리고 사색을 통해 학생들과 밀접한 관련이 있는 이슈들을 접하고, 다양한 커뮤니티 봉사 활동을 통해 사회를 변화시키는 활동에 동참함과 동시에 문화 표현을 통해 창의력을 발휘하는 기회가 된다.

민족학교 이현규 코디네이터는 “다양한 배움과 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 좋은 기회이며 또 지역사회 및 한인 커뮤니티와 더불어 일할 수 있는 소중한 경험이 될 것이다” 라며 커뮤니티 활동에 관심이 있는 학생들이 많이 참여하길 권유했다.

오렌지카운티 여름 청소년 프로그램은 7월 5일부터 8월 16일까지 5주 간 매주 수요일과 목요일 오후 1시부터 4시까지 진행된다.

LA시 시 의원 13지구 후보 토론회 열린다

민족학교와 타이지역개발협회, 아태법률센터, 여성유권자연맹 등 커뮤니티 단체들은 5월 8일 (수) 오후 7시에 LA 시 의회 13구역의 후보자인 존 최 후보와 미첼 오페렐 후보 간 토론회를 개최한다. 토론회는 할리우드 가와 놀만디 가 근방 Saint Garabed Armenian Church, Karapetian Hall (1614 N Alexandria Ave, LA 90027) 에서 열린다. 행사장에 무료 주차 공간이 제공 된다.

Los Angeles – The Korean Resource Center, in partnership with several community organizations, is sponsoring a Candidate Debate between LA City Council District 13 candidates John Choi and Mitch O’Farrell.

The debate will take place on Wednesday May 8th from 7:00pm – 8:30pm at Karapetian Hall at 1614 N Alexandria Ave, Los Angeles, CA. The debate will be hosted by KCET TV host Val Zavala. The debate is free and open to the public, and the event is expected to draw an attendance of 300 community m embers. Korean translation headsets will be provided by KRC.

Dayne Lee, Civic Participation Coordinator at the Korean Resource Center, said, “The May 21 elections are right around the corner. This candidate forum will provide an opportunity for Korean American voters to learn more about local city issues and city council candidates, and will help continue to increase Korean American voter turnout.”

The Korean Resource Center, Thai Community Development Corporation, Asian Pacific American Legal Center, and the League of Women Voters Los Angeles are organizing this candidate debate. Position: Housing Counselor

Position Type: Full time

The Korean Resource Center (KRC) is seeking a Housing Counselor. The Housing Counselor is responsible for foreclosure prevention counseling services and educational workshops as well as some administrative responsibilities. This position requires the ability to work independently and thoughtful decision making skills.

KRC was founded in 1983 to empower the Korean American community, low-income immigrant and people of color communities through a holistic model that combines education, social services, and culture with effective community advocacy and organizing. KRC is guided by the four principles: Live Rightly, Know Our Roots, Empower Ourselves, and Live in Harmony. KRC is a 501c3 non-profit organization and a founding affiliate of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC)

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of clients whose situations require intervention or negotiation with lenders.
• Provide one-on-one foreclosure prevention counseling including intake, collecting and analyzing a client’s financial documents, developing and assisting clients with action plans, negotiations with lender, helping clients with verbal and written communications with lenders, etc.
• Provide accurate and timely responses to client inquiries.
• Assist with preparation and facilitating foreclosure prevention and credit education workshops including scheduling, promotions and outreach, and making presentations.
• Attend required training sessions. (This will involve travel to other cities).
• Manage Housing Counseling Database (including creating, maintaining, and updating client flies).
• Develop educational and marketing materials and support outreach activities.
• Assist in preparing required program reports.
• Perform additional program and administrative duties as assigned.

The Korean Resource Center believes that change rises up from the grassroots, one person at a time. We all know that immigrants, regardless of status, are America’s families, workers, and neighbors, especially in the Korean American community. While President Barack Obama and Congress are poised to address our broken immigration system, we come together with the shared believe that immigrants are vital to our economy and enrich our culture and society. This is why in March, we launched our “America is our Home” grassroots advertisement campaign along with our partners, including the Orange County Congregations Community Organization. Until May 12th, we will be visiting supermarkets in Orange County and Los Angeles every single day, talking to our community members about immigrant rights, collecting petitions, and asking each and every person to support our “America is Home” by donating $1 – just one dollar – to our campaign. We plan to use the money we raise, one dollar and one person at a time, to purchase a full page advertisement in a major Orange County newspaper to demonstrate the community’s broad support for just and humane immigration reform.

“연장자 아파트 이슈 해결하자” 연장자들 활동 나선다

민족학교 산하 연장자 모임인 가주 보건 리더 모임의 회원들은 2013년 3월 25일 캘리포니아 주 상원 의원 캐빈 데 레온(22지구-민주) 사무실을 방문하여 한인 타운 내 연장자 아파트 부족 현상을 해결하는 것을 도와줄 것을 당부했다.

이 모임에 참가한 임 할아버지는 사크라멘토에서 2년 전 로스 앤젤레스로 이사온 후 한 노인 아파트에서 나누어 주는 어플리케이션을 받기 위해 추운 겨울 날 밤새도록 줄 서 기다렸던 힘들었던 경험을 나누며 :어플리케이션을 제출하고도 8년정도를 더 기다려야 한다는 주최측의 통보에 함께 거주하고 있는 자녀들에게 미안한 마음을 금할 수 없었다”라고 말했다.

김 할머니는 작년 섹션 8 계약이 끝나며 집주인으로부터 퇴거 통보를 받고 현재 로스 앤젤레스시의 섹션 8 가 열려 있지 않아 다른 아파트로 이사 갈 수도 없는 상황에서 언제 강제 퇴거 통보를 받을지 몰라 불안한 하루하루를 보내고 있다고 말했다.

민족학교의 저소득층 주택 권익 옹호 활동가인 케이트 강씨는 한인 연장자들은 교통, 병원, 마켓, 약국 등 한인 편의 시설이 있는 한인타운에서 연장자 아파트 입주를 원하지만 8년에서 10년을 기다려야 하는 실정이라며 이 문제 해결을 위한 주 차원의 논의가 필요함을 강조하였다.

이에 캐빈 데 레온 상원의원은 작년 재개발국 폐지 후 저소득층 아파트 문제가 발생할 것을 예상하였다며 저소득층 아파트 기금 마련과 직업 창출을 위해 상정된 S.B. 391에 찬성하며 적극적인 문제 해결을 위한 노력을 약속하였다.

민족학교는 저소득 연장자 아파트 건립을 위한 서명운동을 진행하고 있으며 캠페인을 추진하는 가주보건리더 모임은 매달 민족학교 사무실(900 Crenshaw Blvd, LA 90019)에서 모이고 있다. 다음 모임은 3월 29일 오전 10시이다. 문의 323-937-3718 케이트 강

이민개혁 논의가 의회에서 뜨겁게 달아오름에 따라 사회에서도 이에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 이에 한인 사회에서 13년 동안 이민개혁 캠페인을 추진해온 민족학교는 이민개혁 의회 논의 내용을 소개하고 이에 대응하여 캠페인을 같이 기획하는 모임을 2013년 3월 30일 (토) 오후 5시 및 4월 3일 (수) 오후 6시 30분에 민족학교 사무실(900 Crenshaw Blvd, LA 90019)에서 연다.

민족학교 이현규 이민자권익 코디네이터는”2013년은 한인들에게 중요한 기회이며 시기이다. 현재 진행중인 이민개혁안은 이전보다 통과 될 가능성이 높다. 그러나 하지만 더욱 공정하고, 포괄적이며, 가족 결합을 위주로 한 이민개혁이 통과 되려면 한인 분들의 관심과 도움이 필요하다. 우리 한인들이 목소리를 내야 한다. 많은 분들의 참여를 바란다”라고 말했다.

이민자 권익 단체들 “가족 이민 지켜라”: 파인스타인 사무실 앞에서 집회

민족학교와 CHIRLA 등 이민자 권익 단체들은 연방상원에서 논의되기 시작한 이민개혁 초안의 가족 초청 제도 약화를 항의하며 2013년 3월 21일 다이앤 파인스타인 상원의원 사무실 앞에서 집회 및 의원 방문 활동을 펼쳤다.

민족학교의 이현규 이민자권익 코디네이터는 “이민개혁을 주도하는 상원 8인방은 이민개혁을 논의함에 있어서 전문직 이민을 늘리며 대신 가족 초청을 줄이는 방향으로 논의를 진행하고 있다. 가족이 헤어지는 것을 방치하는 것은 근본적으로 잘못 된 정책이며, 우리 커뮤니티는 가족 결합이 미국 사회에 장기적으로 좋은 것임을 보여주어야 할 것이다.” 라고 말했다. 가족 이민이 줄어들 경우 많은 한인들은 가족과 이별한 채로 살아야 한다.

민족학교 측 대표로 의원 보좌관과 만난 차만옥씨는 자신의 가족초청에 대한 이야기를 나누고 가족 초청의 중요성을 재차 강조했다.

Communities Demand Family Unity in the Immigration Reform Debate

Los Angeles, California: The Korean Resource Center urged Senator Dianne Feinstein to take leadership on an inclusive immigration reform based on family unity. The Korean Resource Center, CHIRLA, and other organizations initiated a rally, press conference, and delegation visit at Senator Feinstein’s office.

Kevin (Hyunkyu) Lee, the Special Programs Organizer, said, “The bipartisan group of 8 senators are considering to greatly reduce family petitions in favor of skilled worker visas. Our community members need to show that the continuous presence of united families will, in the long run, benefit America, and that having separated families are not acceptable provisions for immigration reform.”

The Keeping Families Together rally was in front of Senator Feinstein’s office (11111 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025) at 9:30am and the press conference was at 10:00am on March 21, 2013.

Many organizations and families gathered together to show that keeping families together is one of the most important contents to have in the future immigration reform bill. Our community member Manok, Cha was in the delegation meeting with Dianne Feinstein’s staff and shared her heartfelt story about her situation with the family petition, if the family petitions are reduced then many Korean American community members will continue to be separated from their family.

민족학교 여름 인턴 모집 시작

민족학교는 2013년 여름 인턴을 모집한다. 모집 분야는 1) 이민자 권익 (2명) 및 2) 의료권익 3) 청소년 교육이며 총 4명을 모집하게 된다. 인턴은 풀타임으로 일하며 6월 17일부터 8월 23일까지 10주 동안 활동을 진행하고 소정의 활동비를 받게 되며 숙식을 제공 받는다. 학점 연계 프로그램도 가능하다. 자격 요건은 인턴십을 시작하는 시점에서 대학 1년을 마친 대학생이거나 또는 고등학교를 졸업 한 후 1년 이상 일을 한 경험이 있어야 하며, 사회 정의와 커뮤니티 권익에 관심을 가지고 있어야 한다. 영어와 우리말 구사 능력은 활동에 도움이 되지만 필수 요건은 아니다.

민족학교의 이대인 시민자 참여 코디네이터는 “인턴들은 민족학교에서 추진하는 이민개혁 및 저소득층 연장자 캠페인에 참여하게 된다. 아울러 커뮤니티 단체에서 활동하며 봉사 지식과 진보적인 커뮤니티 조직 기술을 습득 할 수 있는 좋은 기회이다.”라고 말했다.

2009년 이후 메디칼에서 치과 치료 혜택이 사라진 후 많은 수혜자들이 치과 치료를 받지 못해 고통을 받아오고 있습니다.
또한 저소득층 아파트 부족 문제가 심각함에도 2012년 재개발국이 폐지 된 이후 시∙주정부 모두 기금 확보를 위한 뚜렷한 해결책을 제시하지 못해 적절한 주거지를 찾지 못한 저소득층 가정들이 많은 고통을 받고 있습니다.
이에 민족학교와 가주 보건 리더 모임 연장자 회원들은 3월 14일 목요일 오후 2시-4시까지 한남체인 마켓에서 메디칼 치과 치료 복원 및 저소득층 아파트 예산 확보를 촉구하는 서명운동을 진행합니다. 부디 취재 하시어 많은 분들이 동참하실 수 있도록 알려 주시기를 부탁드립니다.
