The Korean Resource Center (KRC) seeks a committed individual to fill the full-time position of the Health Access Project Language Access Coordinator. KRC was founded in 1983 to empower Korean American community through a holistic model that combines education and social services with effective community organizing and policy advocacy. Our office is located in Koreatown, Los Angeles City, and major program areas are social services, community education, immigrant rights, health access, voter empowerment, and culture.

Project Summary

The Health Access Project (HAP) mission is to improve the health status of Korean Americans, foster a belief that health care should be incorporated into our daily lives and ensure Korean American representation in the health policy, funding and education. Given that Korean Americans are known to have the highest uninsured rate at 52% among all ethnicities nationally, the Health Access Project was established to educate on the importance of health care and to engage them in the larger goal of improving health access policies.

The Language Access Coordinator will research, monitor, educate, organize and advocate on behalf of Limited English Proficient (LEP) public health benefit beneficiaries. Through trainings and educational workshops, the Language Access Coordinator will work to empower LEP community members in identifying obstructive language barriers, in understanding their language rights and in developing a multi-faceted campaign to ensure full language access for both state and federal health programs.

Major Responsibilities

1. Research, monitor and gather data on health access issues & policies, especially the language access for the Limited English Proficient (LEP) Korean American seniors,
2. Develop educational and policy materials & reports
3. Produce curriculum to train community members on language access issues,
4. Coordinate the language access campaign working with LEP seniors,
5. Advocate on language access issues for underserved groups (immigrants, Limited English Proficient, seniors)
6. Establish and participate in community partnerships and collaborations regarding immigrant health access issues.

Qualifications

1. Commitment to civil rights, immigrant rights, and social justice
2. Experience working in a community-based non-profit organization in the areas of policy advocacy and community education and organizing
3. Experience working with Korean American, Asian Pacific American and immigrant communities
4. Familiarity with issues regarding health access disparities and language access
5. Excellent communication and writing skills
6. Bilingual in Korean and English an asset

Salary
Dependent on experience and full health benefits
