Today marks the 102nd anniversary of the 3.1 (삼일절) Independence Movement,

commemorating a series of demonstrations demanding Korean independence from the oppressive Japanese occupation, during World War I.

In April 1919, the Korean diaspora from the Americas gathered in Eastern Philadelphia, waving the South Korean flag and demanding freedom from Japanese imperial rule.

Koreans in the U.S. are currently under physical and economic threat from the coronavirus. With the inauguration of Joe Biden's administration, we are hopeful while also living with a great deal of uncertainty.

More than 100 years ago, against all odds, we fought for independence by organizing communities that were centered around people and their freedom.

Today, the Korean American community in the U.S. is living through a critical period, whereby a comprehensive immigration reform could possibly materialize – because of the years of community organizing and advocacy efforts.

Let's build a world free of discrimination and oppression, as our founders before us pursued in the interest of the people 100 years ago.
